Am I weird? Or just getting old?

Posted by Michael, 21 August 2008 · 53 views

I saw a topic on Digg today about someone making fancy ToDo lists in GMail and accessing them through their latest generation smart phone.  I was reading through the comments and found someone mentioning that they just make their ToDo lists on post-it notes, and then they got flak for 'killing trees'.  I had to retort at this point, as trees are in fact renewabale resources, and smart phones (or whatever gadget you would access these GMail ToDo lists from) are not.  This got me thinking, I am really not a gadget guy like it seems everyone is these days.  Consider this.

I do have a cell phone, but it is a model several years older than the iPhone or equivalent.  I don't have a PS3/Wii/Xbox.  I do have a PS2, but it is used entirely for watching movies.  I have basic cable, but watch it sparingly, on my TV that has got to be 12-15 years old.  The only video games I play are classic NES/SNES games emulated on my laptop.  I have a laptop, but it is several years old, and I only have it because it was a going away present from my last job.  I got an iPod as a present from that job as well, or else I wouldn't own one of those.  I have a desktop PC, but it is 7 years old, and only used as a file storage device and something to connect our printer to.  My car is 15 years old.  I have chlothes that I still wear that are older than many of you people reading this.

I suppose my one indulgence is this here, working in some form or another with IPB.  I like to write code, I like to help people fix things.  I just apparently have better things to spend my money on than gadgets.

So am I odd?

I hate to be the the one to break it to you, but yes.  Someone that is a PHP junkie and DOESN'T like tech?  You need to surrender your pocket protector!  Not to mention you need a vice to spend your money on!
I have to say that both options are not necessarily  non-excluding :)
But perhaps it's neither: maybe you just like what you want? there's a lot of "dark forces" trying to drive us to do what the mass does... I guess that's part of living in a capitalist society that only expects one to consume a lot.

Now, if you still play space invaders on your pc, you really are getting old!
I only last year changed my phone to a Samsung D500 (was given it) , before that I had an ancient Nokia 6210, and I still (despite the time) prefer the Nokia as it just does the job. I may even go back to it.

I have no cable tv, although we do have (old and not working properly) a motorised satellite system. Not the usual "sky" ones that most UK people have. Main Tv must be about 10 years old.

No PS2 / PS3 (I do have an old PS1 but it's not been used for a couple of years) , I don't really play modern games. I do have the PC versions of GTA San Andreas and Q3 Arena, but not really played it much.

Gaming, there was a thought that older games were more fun as the graphics were not up to much so they had to concentrate on playability rather than flashy features... I do mostly agree with this

I have an old laptop (I don't use it much) and my desktop PC is about 18 months old (and made from used parts apart from the cheap case) so it's not modern by any standards, certainly it's slow.

My car is 17 years old but causes me no real problems, is very economical, does not break down, and has no rust. So I'm (mostly) happy with it. I have had newer cars but I don't really miss them that much. It does nearly everything I need.

So, in answer to your original question, no not really
Yup, sounds like we are in the same boat mich. Yes we r getting old, a bitter truth. And sometimes I feed sad when I think how the last 10 yrs ..... the precious yrs of my life just passed by n I never knew. All that I did was sit glued to the PC and kept browsing invision forums, never taking time out to enjoy life, or enjoy its small gifts which life unfolds for us every day.
