Common questions
Can I install modifications, apps and hooks even if my files are encoded (I see a bunch of jumbled up letters, numbers, and characters)?
This means that your source files are encrypted. These files are encrypted as a security measure to ensure you don't take the source files from your current location and use them elsewhere. Your source files would typically be encrypted if you are hosted with Invision Power Services. If this is the case, you will be unable to install any modifications that require file edits, you can still install any modifications that have no file edits. The only way to get the ability to install modifications that require file edits is to purchase a license for IP.Board independent of your hosting account. Once you do that, you are able to download unencrypted source files, which you can upload over your existing source files.
Having said that, this is rarely an issue with IP.Board 3. With the complex application and hooks system, there aren't many mods left that require you do edit your files. Don't let this be a "show stopper" for you if you consider the IPS Hosting packages.
I have a free forum with Invisionfree or IPBFree, can I install any modifications to it?
Installing nearly all modifications to your forum requires FTP access. These free forum hosts do not (or rather, legally, should not) grant you FTP access to your files. So this means you will be unable to upload new files, or edit existing files, for your forum files, and modification installations require this. So no, you will not be able to install any of these modifications on your site. Check with the support forum for the service you got your site from, they may have some options available to you.
I downloaded a mod from this site, and I'm having trouble installing it. Where can I go for help?
Each modification in our database is linked to a support topic. Go to the page you downloaded the modification and look for a link that says 'Support Topic', that will take you to the support topic. First, check through the topic to see if your question was already answered. If not, you can reply to that topic asking your question.
I downloaded a mod from somewhere else, have tried getting support from it, and no one is helping me. Can I get support for it here?
You can post a new topic in our Modification Discussion forum, someone will try to help if they are able.
I've tried posting for support, but no one is answering my questions, what can I do?
Unfortunately, no one is required to give support on the modifications they submit, nor is anyone required to respond to all topics that are opened here. We're all doing this in our free time, not professionally. If you can't get a mod to work, and no one is able to help, it's best to not use that mod.
There's a mod someone else wrote that I want to update and release here, can I do that?
In order to release an update to someone else's work, you must obtain their permission. Sometimes mod authors will give up their mods, and post that anyone is free to release updates. In those cases, you can freely submit an update of that person's work here. In these cases, please remember that the original author granted this permission to anybody; you cannot update this person's work and then tell people that no one is free to update what you did. You can also try and contact the original author of a mod to see if they permit you to update their work. You should wait at least a week from when you contact them, however, before you assume they won't respond.
In all cases, be sure that you have proof that you either obtained permission to release the update, or at least tried to get the permission, before submitting the work here. Should any disputes arise as to whether you have permission to release this update, the proof will be requested, and your mod can be removed if you cannot provide this, or if the original author requests your work be removed.
Common errors
I installed a mod, and I don't see that anything at all is working with it, there doesn't seem to be any change to my forums.
This is typically caused by a lack of configuration. Most apps and hooks today come with a set of permission settings, or a global setting to enable an app or hook. Have a second look at the installation instructions that came with the file you downloaded. This should include any steps you need to take after it has been installed. If you still can't get it to function, check the support topic. There's a link to this on the page where you downloaded it in our Downloads Manager.

I'm getting a 'call to undefined function' error.
These typically (but not always) mean a skin template is missing. Whenever you get an error like this, it will list a file name and a line number. Report the full error message you get, and the code that shows up on that line in that file in the support topic for the mod that caused it. If you don't know what mod caused it, feel free to open a new topic in the IP.Board Help forum.
I'm getting an 'invalid argument foreach' error.
These are typically due to not properly setting up the settings for a mod. Like above, they will mention a file and a line number that the error occurred in. Report the full error message and the code on that line in that file to the mod's support topic, or to a new topic in the IP.Board Help forum.
I installed a mod, but it looks weird on my custom skin, how come?
There are lots of different skins out there you can use for your board, from free ones you can download, to commercial skins you can purchase, to custom ones you design or have designed. Each of these skins is different in some way, and no one knows the ins and outs of all of them. As such, all mods are designed based on the structure of the IPB Default Skin that comes with IP.Board. So any mods you install will work fine with the IPB Default Skin, but may not look so good with your other skins. This does not mean the mod is wrong, it just means your skin is different than the IPB Default Skin. To solve this, it's best to ask either the mod author or skin maker, but neither one is responsible for such issues, but they may be able to assist.
