ok, i got it installed but now where do you learn how to use it...How do you upload components....this is a pathetic system of packages IMO...I can't believe I paid for this crap...for a free board smf was way easier to use...if it wasn't for a stupid hacker we would still be using it...I am so aggrivated right now. I feel like I spent the money for nothing..

The zip file I downloaded has a manual to it? I will go look. I am familliar with SMF but just changed to IPB and am used to having a package installer...
You only need to read the "Fresh Install.htm" file, not the documentation folder (as that is primarily for mod authors)

You have to...

upload one file (inside /sources/components_acp/)

create or upload one directory (/mod_install)

import one file via the acp (ipd_components.xml)

It's in that "Fresh Install.htm" file anyway, open that with your browser and its all there. Should only take you a minute at most to do. ;)

When do you get that error? When trying to access UMI, or importing ipd_components.xml?

I had this previously installed together with a few mods on my previous forum, I made the mistake of uninstalling the mods before IPS upgraded the forum to the latest version 3, so how do I remove the entries from the db now please? is is a case of just removing them?

I have downloaded the UMI but haven't done anything else.

I am looking at the 'read me' bit.

Where is states:
Delete - Check and see if you have a file named index.php, or a folder called /images in your forum's /mod_install directory. These could be left over from previous versions of this script. If either of these exist on your site, delete them. In addition, any XML and PHP files in this /mod_install directory from a previous IPB version can be safely deleted as well.

I have taken a screen shot of what I think this is refering too:

What you are looking at is from 2007 UMI install.  Can you confirm what I delete, if anything?

Many thanks.

You already have the UMI's mod_install directory and those files you are showing are the mods install files. There is nothing to delete at the moment (nothing that "needs" deleting immediately), as you do not have either a file named index.php, or a folder called /images inside the /mod_install directory. These would sometimes be here from an older version of the UMI for IPB 2.1.x.

Are you sure the UMI is not installed ? ;)

Go to the Components tab in the ACP and look on the left side menu for it. Scroll down a bit to be sure.

If it is not there, proceed as follows...

With the .zip you downloaded, extract it. There is only one file to upload via FTP and one to import via the ACP, nothing more.

Upload (from the .zip > sources > components_acp > umi.php) to /sources/components_acp

Now go to the Admin tab in the ACP. On the left side menu > Components > Manage Components (not the components tab, its on the left side menu in the Admin tab)

Scroll down a bit and find the bit that says "Import XML Component File" under the list on the middle , browse and import the ipd_components.xml from the UMI .zip you downloaded.

That's it. Its installed. :)

The UMI was installed in 2007 but it states in my ACP...

Your copy of (FSY22) Universal Mod Installer is UNKNOWN!

I took this to mean it is an old version and doesn't work and I would have to install a newer version?

It is an old version. Luckily, upgrading UMI couldn't be easier, just follow the steps given by Andy.

You mis-read it ;)

Go to the ADMIN tab, not the components tab. Then on the left side of the Admin tab, there is an entry to manage Components.

See my quick pic to help...

Are you sure you have clicked the Admin tab, NOT the components tab ;) , then on the left side look for "Manage Components"

EDIT... I see from your URL you are using iPBFree , which is a hosted 1.3 board. You will be unable to use the UMI on here unfortunately.
