In my case this is great, because I provide Multi-IPB Hosting to other people and I didn´t want to register there only to get access to the board in case they screw up something.
I´ll implement the code and see how it works.

Since IPB now has "IPB ACP .htaccess Protection" for security, is this tutorial still useful?

Yes, it enhances more security to thoose who need it.

For 2.2 you're correct. In 2.3 security is greatly enhanced by "IPB ACP .htaccess Protection" which in effect makes an Admin use a second username and password to login to ACP.
