There was a topic about this over at IPS, figured we could use one too.

Anybody here use Twitter?  What kind of benefit do you get out of it?  Do you do it just to try and get a lot of followers?  Do you update your status in it a lot?

I personally like to see what other folks in the IPB community are up to, and I have several local things like our hockey team, symphony, and such.

If you use twitter, post your ID here. ;) @MichaelMcCune

@MichaelJohnD

I started off using twitter just for news and updates but lately have been following some IPB modders and other political and tech people.

Keep up to date with DevFuse mod development and releases.

I have to admit I'd heard about it but never really used it. But for some reason, this very week I came accross 2 very interesting sites. One of them is an awesome video which explains the virtues of twitter and the other one is an article called "what exactly is the point of twitter" which also helped me a lot:

The article.

The video.

Since them, I've decided to open a couple of accounts. (not including them here because they're in Spanish). But yeah, I'm now beginning to understand its full potential, which I believe is huge! ;)

By the way, how would I go adding my twitter updates to, say, my forum's signature? that'd be cool!

It doesn't have to be used that way, it can also be used to get updates from things you're interested in.  I thought the way you did too, then I tried it. ;)

Same here. I only made an account there since I saw that Digsby had the possibility to show tweets, and got my interest.

ok, understood - maybe my opinion was a bit aggressive. Hopefully I dont have affront any excited user. That wasnt my intention.
Maybe it is a matter of the age. Young people are often fascinated by all that new bells and whisles stuff. Older ones enjoy the times when mobiles doesnt rings and no chat messenger makes any sound...

No worries, no offense taken. ;)

You might find this interesting though:

Reuters reporter Alexei Oreskovic recently authored an interesting blog post about the demographics of Twitter users. What he discovered was that 18-24 year olds, the traditional social media early adopters, are actually 12 percent less likely than average to visit Twitter (Index of 88). It is the 25-54 year old crowd that is actually driving this trend. More specifically, 45-54 year olds are 36 percent more likely than average to visit Twitter, making them the highest indexing age group, followed by 25-34 year olds, who are 30 percent more likely.

The reason I got interested in the first place was that facebook is so slow and so time consuming! I’m really only interested in the status of some users. That-s about it.
Reading blogs can be cool, but it-s also so time consuming...
So I love the idea of just a couple of lines.

The beauty of Twitter is that you’re limited to 140 characters, which means there isn’t that struggle to find the time to post or reply to friends (as you might in a blog situation.) If a friend posts something funny or interesting, you don’t have to figure out from where you’re going to steal the 30 minutes it will take for you to write a long e-mail or blog entry about why you think the way you do about whatever they posted about. You don’t have to apologize for not writing more - your reply is *expected* to be brief and clever or you’re not even expected to reply at all.
