Anyone know what PC setting/s might prevent me from downloading an exe file from cnet? I download the file using FF and the popup box says "cancelled - download.com", and the actual file download is "not a valid application". I also have issues with cnet using IE, "Your current security settings do not allow this file to be downloaded".

I have no problem downloading other files from various sites so suspect it's the exe file extension.

Have already checked for malware etc.

Any clues? Thanks.  ;)

My first thought was a group policy setting although that seems unlikely on a home machine.

I know IE can stop you downloading certain file types (I "think" its settings in MSN Messenger that can cause this too, if you have that installed) , the setting is called something like "prevent potentially unsafe..."

I'd have to speculate its happening in FF due to some antivirus or other security software you are running.

Can you post a link to the Cnet page you cannot download from ? ;)

I have MalwareBytes , its a good piece of software :)

It does download for me, I'm assuming you suspect something on your machine anyway ?

See if you can get it via another browser (try downloading Google Chrome as I think that does not have a .exe extension and installs via the Win installer) , then download Mbam via Chrome ;)

I have issues downloading this on FF and IE already.  I'd rather not install a 3rd browser, but thanks anyway. ;)

You can always simply uninstall it afterwards (or grab Opera / Safari instead if its Chrome in particular you did not like) ;)

Was just a quick thought. If you cannot download them with anything else either, you know its something else...

One other solution if possible is to get a friend to download it , put it on a USB stick / CD etc and then you use that ?

I was able to get the file from a friend, but it still bugs me that I cannot download an exe extension.

This continues to be a problem and it's almost intolerable. This PC refuses to download exe files. I have disabled Windows firewall, uninstalled AVG, reset security settings to default, and tried both IE and FF browsers. FF "cancels" the download and IE prompts a security-breach popup box.

HELP!

Are you on XP, Vista or Windows 7?
UAC (think that's what it's called) in Vista (and probably 7 too) can do weird things. If you haven't disabled this yet, try to do that. You'll find the setting for it in the same place where you add/edit user accounts.

If it's a portable PC, try to take to a different local network. It can also be your modem/router/switch. This would also affect other devices using the same network.

the "exe" download issue which has plagued me for months has been solved: Control Panel / Internet Options / Security / Reset all zones to default level worked. No clue whatsoever how THAT one got borked!
