i changed the favicon.ico on the server but when i open the page i still see the ipb default favicon
cleared browser cache, still same problem..
can it be changed only by replacing the current or?

It may take time to appear, even with clearing browser cache (in IE as that stores them in a strange way from memory)
Try another browser to see which one appears. Firefox usually picks up the change quite quickly.
