I know Microsoft Office is the biggest name when it comes to office software and everyone knows their products like the back of their hands, but home users can't afford the $100+ price tag that Microsoft puts on this product so I thought I would part with a little bit of insider tips and tricks (as I haven't done on IM for quite some time)

Open Office,

Open office was first developed by Sun Microsoft Systems.

If anyone knows any other free office software packages please share.

Open office works quite well :)

I think some kind of MS Office 'starter' pack is available to OEM's though for little if any cost.

Been using Open Office myself for at least 5-6 years. I rarely use it though, so it's enough for me.

But didn't MS plan to do a free version? With less features and ads? Am quite sure I read that somewhere a while ago.

Martin I do remember Microsoft saying that they will be releasing a free version of their Office software package, but to date this has failed to bare light. Another free office package is build into "google" and their mail client, this runs via HTML and Java which makes it rather quick the only real downfall is that if you lose your internet connection (i.e typing a word document while using an Free Wifi hotspot at an cafe you will lose all that data)

I know Microsoft did release an Student - Home version of Office but this is still nearly $80-90.

Another great little office kind of programme is Notepad++
http://notepad-plus-plus.org/

This is one of the best programme's I have used to edit raw PHP, HTML, etc etc.

Please continue to share cool little office or word processing programme's.

My new machine had it pre-installed although I only looked at Word once, it was a new version but had ad's on the sidebar. I 'think' that's the 'free' one being offered, the idea being you like it but want more features so pay to get the upgrade (and no ads)

I may still have it and re-install it as I imaged the data before I re-installed (I had to re-install afresh as it was full of bloatware generally)

wasn't that a free trial of Microsoft Office ? I know the free 30 day trial of Microsoft Office 2010 has ad's and limited fuctions.

Not sure as I had to wipe the machine to remove the preinstalled bloatware excess they thought I would like. I did assume it was a permanent ad sponsored version. :)
